John Witzig

*1944, Sydney, Australia

John Witzig grew up near Palm Beach and started surfing in the late 1950s. When Witzig borrowed a camera in 1962, he photographed his friends in particular, like later world champion Nat Young. He approached the surfers as far as the waves allowed to capture the interaction between the force of nature and the waves.

Often, he aimed at his motives without looking through the viewfinder and squeezed. Witzig had the luck to know the best surfers in Australia like Bob Evans, who founded Surfing World Magazine in 1962. Ron Perrott also counted among his close friends. In 1963 Witzig wrote his first article for the Australia's Surfing World Magazine. The following year, he sat in the jury of the World Surfing Championships, which took place in Sydney.

Witzig is always trying to bring the Australian Surfsport to the world's top.
