Selected Works & Loba Winners Luca Locatelli and Gonçalo Fonseca

August 5, 2023 - July 23, 2023

Thinking about the future of the world and how we deal with the enormous environmental problems of our time is at the forefront of photographer and LOBA winner 2020 Luca Locatelli. In his long-term project "Future Studies" he shows photographs of shut down nuclear power plants, a North Sea wind farm, opencast lignite mines, gigantic greenhouses - often from an aerial perspective due to visitor restrictions or bans on visits. The graphic motifs which shine with a special colorfulness, have the appeal of artistic documentary photography.

Locatelli started working as a documentary photographer in 2006 and has worked for National Geographic since 2015.

This is contrasted by the series "New Lisbon" by the LOBA Newcomer winner 2020 Gonçalo Fonseca. The Portuguese focuses on the fate of individuals and the consequences of tourism in Lisbon. With increasing popularity, the housing market there has changed rapidly, pushing residents out of the city and offering tourists more space for overnight accommodation. The photographer, whose project is not yet completed, took an empathetic look at the everyday life of the “displaced”.

Fonseca reports for magazines worldwide and has already received several awards, including the World Press Photo Awards 2016 and 2019.

As part of the exhibition of both LOBA participants, the Leica Gallery Frankfurt opens its own archive and shows a collection of selected photographs.
