Jan von Holleben: Sugar Wow

May 5, 2023 - July 29, 2023

“No other drug is so widely used and nobody can live without it. Sugar is simply the most amazing thing for us living beings,” says photographer Jan von Holleben. In his Berlin photo studio he has the sweetest temptation since food has existed. “I wanted to immerse myself completely in this world. I found the classic sweets, which had a clear design language, particularly interesting.

The exhibition shows a land of milk and honey consisting of a visual world of sweets. The aesthetically colorful pictures, the subjects of which are made entirely of sweet sugar materials, show a variety of colors and shapes of what is probably one of the most important foods of our time, and is therefore also a topic that must be viewed very critically, without which our society would be unimaginable.

“The world of sweets is very complex and intense. The humans have a very special way of dealing with sugar in all cultures. The transition from essential nutrition (carbohydrates, acids, etc.) via sweet pastries to what we call sweets is fluid. Sweets are the most extreme form of sugar – sugar almost in its pure form, mixed with a little color and a few other ingredients for even better shelf life, materiality or sensory properties.”

In his pictures, Jan von Holleben takes the viewer on a journey to experience sugar in a different way and to deal with the subject. The humorous, the aesthetic and the decorative enter into an essential symbiosis that invites you to smile.
